Ubuntu Gnome is Now A Real Boy
An Official Ubuntu-based Linux Distro
Looks like it’s official, according to the Ubuntu Gnome mailing list, which by the way is the official name of the new Gnome flavor of Ubuntu. Bye Bye remix.
A lot of fans are still chanting for a cooler name. Gubuntu seems to be the favorite around blog comments and social media. Thing is though, when you say it out loud it’s pretty indistinguishable from Goobuntu, a moniker being used by Google for an internal fork for some time now.
I usually don’t get too worked up over this kind of news since I’m a mobile/gadget guy but, as someone who likes to jump from Ubuntu flavor to flavor looking for a new experience and maybe something cool I hadn’t seen before, I have to say this is exciting. Though it’s not the biggest surprise in the world. Check out my shocked gnome face.
Here’s the relevant portion of the announcement from the mailing list.
We are pleased to announce that Ubuntu GNOME is now an official Ubuntu flavour. We recently applied to the Tech Board to become an official Ubuntu flavour and the Tech Board approved our request at their most recent meeting<http://ubottu.com/meetingology/logs/ubuntu-meeting/2013/ubuntu-meeting.2013-03-04-21.00.html>! http://ubottu.com/meetingology/logs/ubuntu-meeting/2013/ubuntu-meeting.2013-03-04-21.00.html Ubuntu GNOME aims to bring a mostly pure GNOME desktop experience to Ubuntu. Our first release for 12.10 showed that there was a strong demand for a great GNOME experience on Ubuntu and we are now working towards our second release based on Ubuntu 13.04. We will not be participating in this week's Beta 1 Release but we are planning to release images for the Final Beta at the end of the month. Daily image builds are currently being set up and we except that they will be available within a few weeks. Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 will be released with GNOME 3.6, since Ubuntu held back on GNOME this cycle. We are however making GNOME 3.8 available from the gnome3-team PPA.
Interesting side note: Yes, as an American, I did feel the urge to change it every time I saw the word flavor spelled with a “u”.[via OMG Ubuntu &Webupd8]
